When our animal companions aren’t feeling well, they cannot speak to tell us what’s bothering them or where it hurts. It’s up to us, as caring pet owners and veterinary professionals, to be able to recognize the signs of a potential problem and address it as quickly as possible. Veterinary diagnostics are tools that allow us to look below the surface of the skin to identify, diagnose and treat a wide variety of illnesses, injuries and medical conditions. A quick and accurate diagnosis can greatly improve the outcome for the patient.
At Ponemah Veterinary Hospital, we offer a wide range of comprehensive veterinary diagnostic services to help manage the ongoing health of your pet. From routine blood work and urinalysis, to digital x-ray and ultrasound, to an in-house laboratory for fast and accurate results, rest assured that whatever is ailing your animal companion, we are well equipped to get to the bottom of it. The goal is to help return your pet to a normal, active lifestyle as soon as possible.
Our in-house blood analyzers allow us to test liver and kidney function, electrolytes, thyroid levels, and blood cell counts very quickly. Because only a small sample size is needed, we are also able to run these tests on pocket pets. We can run a complete urinalysis and urine culture in-house as well as test for heartworm, Lyme disease, feline leukemia and feline aids, and parvo. Cytology services are also available for evaluating ear infections, skin conditions, and lumps.
Internal parasite testing is very important due to the potential risks parasites bring to both humans and animals. We send our fecal parasite tests out to a lab to be run by a method called centrifugation. This technique allows for many more parasites to be found than with traditional in-house flotation methods. We can also ask for a special test for Giardia to be run if needed. There are a wide variety of tests available at the commercial laboratory, depending on your pet’s diagnostic needs.
Our on-site digital radiography equipment allows for rapid, high quality radiographs, which are available for immediate viewing to aid in the diagnosis of many disorders. We also utilize teleradiography in which your pet’s radiographs can be transmitted to a board certified radiologist for interpretation or we can easily email the images to a referral specialist when needed. Ask us for a copy of your pet’s radiographs on CD for your records. We would be happy to provide one!
We are proud to offer in house ultrasounds performed by a mobile ultrasonographer. Our ultrasonographers are board certified cardiologists or internists with extensive experience and are widely regarded as some of the best in the area. If ultrasonography is needed on an emergency basis, a referral can be arranged.
We provide ECG services on-site and can arrange for a remote ECG consultation with a cardiologist if needed.
With our paperless medical records and digital imaging, we are able to easily obtain consultations from a wide array of specialists including radiologists, cardiologists, surgeons, dentists and internists. Consultation reports provide us with diagnostic information as well as recommendations for further testing and treatment.
